Photosynthetic down-regulation over long-term CO2 enrichment in leaves of sour orange (Citrus aurantium) trees

چکیده
• Understanding how trees are affected by a long-term increase in atmospheric CO 2 is crucial to understanding the future impact of global climate change. Measurements of photosynthetic characteristics were made in sour orange trees ( Citrus aurantium ) growing under an enhanced CO 2 atmosphere and N-replete soil for 14 yr to determine whether photosynthetic down-regulation had occurred. • Photosynthesis, A : C i gas exchange relationships and Rubisco activity and content were measured throughout the 14th year of the experiment. The CO 2 -induced enhancement ratio of photosynthesis was calculated and compared with estimates of the enhancement of cumulative wood biomass production. • Content of the large subunit of Rubisco was significantly reduced by CO 2 enrichment indicating that down-regulation had occurred. A high correlation between the CO 2 induced enhancement of photosynthesis and the enhancement of cumulative wood biomass production suggested that the decline in wood biomass production was closely related to the decline in photosynthesis. • These results indicate that long-term CO 2 enrichment can result in photosynthetic down-regulation in leaves of trees, even under nonlimiting N conditions.

Seventeen years of carbon dioxide enrichment of sour orange trees: final results
The long-term responses of trees to elevated CO2 are especially crucial (1) to mitigating the rate of atmospheric CO2 increase, (2) to determining the character of future forested natural ecosystems and their spread across the landscape, and (3) to determining the productivity of future agricultural tree crops. Therefore, a long-term CO2-enrichment experiment on sour orange trees was started in...
متن کاملEffects of Atmospheric CO(2) Enrichment on Photosynthesis, Respiration, and Growth of Sour Orange Trees.
Numerous net photosynthetic and dark respiratory measurements were made over a period of 4 years on leaves of 24 sour orange (Citrus aurantium) trees; 8 of them growing in ambient air at a mean CO(2) concentration of 400 microliters per liter, and 16 growing in air enriched with CO(2) to concentrations approaching 1000 microliters per liter. Over this CO(2) concentration range, net photosynthes...
متن کاملMild strain cross protection of tristeza: a review of research to protect against decline on sour orange in Florida
Tristeza, caused by Citrus tristeza virus (CTV), has long been present in Florida but outbreaks of decline on sour orange rootstock were occasional events until the late 1970s. Sour orange rootstock was valued for the high quality of fruit produced and was widely used because of its tolerance of citrus blight, a disease of unknown etiology. Research was directed towards the selection and screen...
متن کاملRelationships of leaf Fatty acids to cold hardening of citrus seedlings.
Three cultivars of citrus with different sensitivities to freezing temperatures (citron, Citrus medica L.; rough lemon, C. limon Burm. F; sour orange, C. aurantium L.) were cold hardened for 4 weeks. Lipids from leaves of hardened and control seedlings were fractionated and analyzed for fatty acids. The absolute amount of triglycerides and phospholipids increased in the leaves upon hardening. W...
متن کاملSystemic resistance in citrus to Tetranychus urticae induced by conspecifics is transmitted by grafting and mediated by mobile amino acids
Recent research suggests that systemic signalling and communication between roots and leaves plays an important role in plant defence against herbivores. In the present study, we show that the oviposition of the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae in the systemic leaves of citrus rootstock Citrus aurantium (sour orange) was reduced by 50% when a lower leaf was previously infested with c...
